How Not To Be Bewitched By False Doctrines

"Most churches in our society are bewitched," says John MacArthur.

He says "bewitched" means "charmed, fascinated in a misleading way, related to spells, sorcery, and demon power".

He also quotes Galatians 3:3-6 NIV here:

Faith or Works of the Law

3 You foolish Galatians!
Who has bewitched you?
Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.
2 I would like to learn just one thing from you:
Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law,
or by believing what you heard?
3 Are you so foolish?
After beginning by means of the Spirit,
are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?[a]
4 Have you experienced[b] so much in vain—
if it really was in vain?
5 So again I ask,
does God give you his Spirit
and work miracles among you by the works of the law,
or by your believing what you heard?
6 So also Abraham “believed God,
and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

If we are true followers of Christ and lovers of God, we must be on that straight and narrow path and get them right for now is the time to do so, more than at any other time in our lives.

It is the Holy Spirit who leads us to truth for He is the "Spirit of Truth". Here's what Jesus says:

26 But the Advocate,
the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in my name,
will teach you all things
and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 14:26 NIV

Further, this is how the Holy Spirit can help us in our search for God's Truth:

13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes,
he will guide you into all the truth.
He will not speak on his own;
he will speak only what he hears,
and he will tell you what is yet to come.

John 16:13 NIV

We really have to be careful of all those false prophets as Jesus' Second Coming comes near. Here are several important verses from Bible Study Tools:

True and False Prophets

15 “Watch out for false prophets.
They come to you in sheep’s clothing,
but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
16 By their fruit you will recognize them.
Do people pick grapes from thornbushes,
or figs from thistles?
17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit,
but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit,
and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit
is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

True and False Disciples

21 “Not everyone who says to me,
‘Lord, Lord,’
will enter the kingdom of heaven,
but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me on that day,
‘Lord, Lord,
did we not prophesy in your name
and in your name drive out demons
and in your name perform many miracles?’
23 Then I will tell them plainly,
‘I never knew you.
Away from me,
you evildoers!’

The Wise and Foolish Builders

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine
and puts them into practice
is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
25 The rain came down,
the streams rose,
and the winds blew and beat against that house;
yet it did not fall,
because it had its foundation on the rock.
26 But everyone who hears these words of mine
and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man
who built his house on sand.
27 The rain came down,
the streams rose,
and the winds blew and beat against that house,
and it fell with a great crash.”
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things,
the crowds were amazed at his teaching,
29 because he taught as one who had authority,
and not as their teachers of the law.

Matthew 7:15-29 NIV

As John MacArthur says, "Satan snatches the seed" before it has been given a chance to grow -- thus, the Gospel doesn't take root in us.

But there is a solution: we can have spiritual discernment through the Holy Spirit. Jesus made sure of that.
